Hi Susan,
What you describe is very different than many of the places I see and visit in Chicago. People here are so spread out, and busy commuting to child care and to work, that there isn\’t that sense of community that you describe. The Labor Day picnic is a nice idea (especially if the weather cooperates and the families can be outside). It is important to have events like that all year long, especially if a new family has joined the group. This will help bring them into the fold.

All of my parents are friends or kids of my friends so we are pretty friendly. They know they can come and go. I have a picnic for all every Labor Day. That gets all parents together where they can socialize.
