It was a great time for me and my child to connect and for both of us to realize there is more than 1 correct way to solve a problem.

I have been in that situation many times where i have to learn how the kids are doing the math these days in order to help them. It was very frustrating hearing at the beginning, “thats not how we are supposed to do it”. How else would you do it? I have a better understanding and more of an appreciation for this “new math”.

He is in elementary school. I learned the old way so that is the way I had started to teach him. He would forget the steps or not know where to put the place values and get frustrated. I also was not a big fan of math, but in learning the new math it helped him understand it and me explain it better because we learn better visually.
