Leaving Children to Chance

by Early Math Counts

In yesterday’s ECE Policy Matters entry, Susan Ochshorn outlined the new regulatory changes from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as they pertain to child care.  Although this may be seen as a knee-jerk reaction to Jonathon Cohn’s “The Hell of American Child Care” published last month, I believe that these changes were already being written into policy long before the article came out.

Understandably, Cohn’s article has people, especially parents, very worried about the care their children are receiving while they are at work.  In 2012, Child Care Aware of America published 2012 Leaving Children to Chance Report (Child Care Homes).  This report focuses on small child care homes where 6 children are less are cared for by outside – of-family providers.  Click on Illinois to see where we stand.

I think we all know that there are amazing people out there caring for children.  They have wonderful programs with caring adults.  The environments are safe and nurturing, and the children are receiving exceptional care. These reports are unveiling another side of the story.
